Better Health Requires More Than One Approach: Why Personalized Care Matters
Aug 11, 2026
One of the things I have learned throughout my career is that healthcare is rarely about finding a single right answer. More often than not, it is about finding the right combination of tools, strategies, and expertise for the person sitting in front of you. Conventional medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine are not competing philosophies. They are complementary approaches that, when used thoughtfully, can help patients achieve better outcomes and build healthier, more resilient lives.
I don't believe healthcare should ask patients to choose one path over another. I believe in collaboration, personalization, and meeting people where they are.
The Best Care Is Individualized
Every patient brings a unique story, set of goals, medical history, and life experience to the table. Two people with the same diagnosis may require very different treatment plans depending on their circumstances, priorities, and overall health. Sometimes surgery is the right answer. Sometimes medication plays an important role. Other times, improvements in sleep, nutrition, movement, stress management, or social support can significantly influence outcomes. More often than not, it is a combination of these things that creates meaningful, lasting change. Healthcare works best when we resist the urge to think in absolutes and instead focus on what each individual truly needs.
Expanding the Conversation
As an orthopedic surgeon, I was trained to diagnose problems and provide solutions. That foundation remains incredibly important. But over time, I became increasingly interested in the factors that influenced recovery and long-term health outside of the operating room. Why did some patients thrive while others struggled? Why did certain individuals recover more quickly, maintain healthier habits, or experience fewer setbacks?
The answers often extended far beyond a procedure or prescription. Sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, relationships, and mindset all mattered. These weren't alternative concepts. They were essential pieces of the same puzzle. That realization led me to pursue additional training in integrative medicine and lifestyle medicine, not as a replacement for conventional care, but as a way to expand the tools available to support patients more comprehensively.
Collaboration Over Competition
Too often, healthcare conversations become framed as either/or choices. Traditional medicine or holistic medicine. Treatment or prevention. Science or lifestyle. I believe those distinctions can sometimes limit what is possible.
The future of healthcare is collaborative. It is rooted in evidence, informed by experience, and personalized to the individual. It recognizes that medications, procedures, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and social connection can all play valuable roles depending on the situation. The question should never be, "Which philosophy is right?" The better question is, "What combination of approaches will help this person achieve the best outcome?"
A Partnership in Health
At Valivera Health, my goal is to help patients become active participants in their health journey. That means creating space for conversation, understanding what matters most to them, and building a plan that reflects both medical expertise and personal priorities. There is rarely a quick fix, and there is rarely only one solution. But when patients feel supported, informed, and empowered, and when healthcare professionals work collaboratively across disciplines, we create the opportunity for something much more meaningful: lasting health, resilience, and confidence through every stage of life.
